YORK, Pa. — Goucher's five starters were held to a combined total of 15 points tonight and when the six players who came in off the bench were able to produce only 20 additional points, the Gophers were tagged with a 79-35 loss by York.
The Spartans (3-1) tallied the first 15 points of the contest in extending their winning streak in the series between the two schools to 11 games. Goucher's first points were from a layup by Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) after 5:33 had elapsed. The Gophers (1-3) managed to knock their deficit down to as few as 11 points on a basket by Brittany Logan (Ft. Washington, Md./Friendly) with 6:39 left to play before halftime, but they trailed 40-15 at the break.
York assumed its biggest lead when Tiffany Jantzen canned two free throws with :23 remaining to make the score 79-33, but Shante Atkinson (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) converted a layup eight seconds later to close out the scoring.
Among the starters, Kiara Doughty (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) was the top scorer for Goucher as she finished with six points, but Kollock delivered 10 points off the bench.
April Sparkman, who was 7-for-20 from the field, supplied the Spartans with game-high totals of 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Goucher's last win over York was an 86-72 triumph on Feb. 11, 2004, when both teams belonged to the Capital Athletic Conference.
