Strong Second Half Not Enough For Goucher Women's Basketaball In 58-50 Loss To Elizabethtown On Senior Night

BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College's fourth quarter charge ran out of time against Elizabethtown College 58-50 in Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) posted 20 points, eight steals and four rebounds for the Gophers. The sophomore shot 7-for-11 from the floor, 1 of 2 from behind the arc and 5 of 5 from the free throw line for her seventh 20-point game of the season and 11th of her career.

With her 20 points, the current Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week moved into 15th place on the program's all-time career point list with 705 points. In addition, she recorded eight steals for the fourth time in her career and now has 87 steals this season and can tie Renie Amoss' (102, 1993-94) single season program record with 15 thefts.

Trailing 48-27 going into the final quarter, Goucher used a 23-10 fourth quarter to cut the margin to 58-50 with 52 seconds left. Williams scored nine of her 20 points in the stanza, but after two Williams free throws with 52 seconds left the Gophers could not get the ball back before the final horn sounded.

Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) posted eight points and a season-high 15 rebounds. The sophomore hauled in a career-high 18 caroms at Yeshiva on December 30, 2018 and has 13 games with at least 10 boards. 

Prior to the game, Goucher honored senior Kerry Chun for her four-year career in Baltimore. Chun appeared in 73 games including 58 starts in her four-year career. She has amassed 244 points, 153 rebounds, 85 assists and 54 steals in her career. She recorded four 10 point games in her career with three of those outputs coming in her sophomore campaign including a career-best 13 points against Wesleyan on December 30, 2017.  

Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) registered nine points and five rebounds.

Elizabethtown had a strong first half to jump out to a 33-16 lead at the break thanks to an 18-10 first quarter and a 15-6 second frame. The Gophers won the second half by a margin of 34-26 after the Blue Jays won the third quarter 15-11 before the host used a 23-10 fourth quarter in a 58-50 loss.

Goucher College wraps up its home slate against Moravian College on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m. It is National Girls and Women In Sports Day and girls in fourth to eighth grade are invited to participate in a free All-Sports Playday from 12-2 p.m. The game will also be Breast Cancer Awareness with t-shirts being sold for $10, a 50/50 raffle that will be announced at the men's game and a chance to shoot free throws for a $1.
