Maxwell Prevails in Three Sets at No. 4 for Team-High Ninth Singles Win
GRANTHAM, Pa. — The doubles team of Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) extended its winning streak to five matches and both players were also victorious in singles play for Goucher today as head coach Sally Baum's Gophers were pinning a 7-2 setback on Messiah.
After coming out on top, 8-3, over Erin Ipsen and Stacey Clark at No. 1 doubles to raise their record this season to 5-1, Pulupa and Bergman made quick work of their respective singles opponents: Pulupa polished off Ipsen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Bergman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Cassie Beck at No. 3.
Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) picked up her team-leading ninth singles win of the season as she bested Katelyn Clark 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Before that she registered an 8-4 win along with Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) over Beck and Katelyn Clark at No. 2 doubles.
Lee, like Maxwell, rallied from being down a set in singles play to defeat Stacey Clark 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
The Gophers (5-7) picked up their other point at No. 6 singles where Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) turned back Ellen Harpold 7-5, 7-5.
The Falcons earned their points with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 singles.
