Michael Bossom, one of the most successful high school
volleyball coaches in Maryland, took over Goucher's Division III
women's program in July 2006.
The Gophers accomplished winning records in both of Bossom’s
first two seasons, going 34-29. The program had not experienced
back-to-back winning seasons since 1997 and 1998, and the 34
victories during Bossom’s tenure is more than Goucher’s
volleyball program realized during the previous seven seasons
combined.
Before joining Goucher's coaching staff, Bossom had coached the
girls volleyball team at Centennial High School in Ellicott City,
Md., since 1994. During his 12 seasons there, he guided the Eagles
to 214 wins and eight state championships, including five
consecutive titles starting in 1996.
Bossom was recognized twice during his run at Centennial as All-Met
Coach of the Year by both The Baltimore Sun and Washington Post,
and more than two dozen of the players he coached went on to play
the sport at the collegiate level.
In addition, Bossom spent more than two years as the head coach of
the U.S. Men's Standing Disabled Team, which placed fourth under
his direction at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia.
