TOWSON, Md. -- Sophomore Lexi Stewart (Laurel, Md.) and junior Jack Hodges (London, England) have been named the Goucher College Athletes of the Week following their performances for their respective teams.
Stewart, was named the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year following two silvers and a gold at the 2017 championships this past weekend.
She won the 200m dash (26.15) and placed second in the 100m dash (12.79) on Sunday, earning Goucher's first Landmark Conference major award since 2012 when Destiny Phillips was named the Rookie of the Year. Stewart completed the weekend with one All-Landmark First Team Honor and two All-Landmark Second Team honors.
For men's tennis, Hodges, was the deciding factor in the Landmark Conference Championship match, despite falling behind following the first set. Senior Dean Polisena took the first set 1-6 over Hodges, but the advantage did not last. Heading into the second set, Hodges made the necessary adjustments and took the second set 6-2. With momentum on his side and his teammates looking on anxiously, the junior from London, England, buried his opponent 6-0, earning the Gophers their second Landmark Conference Championship in as many years.
The conference championship gives the men's tennis team an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They are set to play John Carroll this Friday at Johns Hopkins in the first round at 2 p.m.
