Gophers Take Early Lead in Zone IV Region I
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's riding team picked up right where it left off last year as it bested the 11 other colleges and universities of Zone IV Region I today in the regular season opener hosted by Mount St. Mary's but conducted on Goucher College's campus.  Goucher secured a commanding 15-point lead in the team standings today.  This positions them on top of the Region as they attempt to claim their 8th consecutive Regional Championship.
Goucher finished with 47 points overall, well ahead of Johns Hopkins University, the second-place finisher, who concluded the day with 32 points.

Senior Cary Hundley (Ellicott City, MD/Marriott's Ridge) was declared the event's high point rider after first place finishes in both open flat and open fences. Senior Clea Lerner (Los Angeles, CA/Renaissance Arts Academy) placed first in Novice flat and qualified for the Regional Championships in April.
Other blue ribbon performances came from first-year Sarah Edmunds (Lancaster, Pa./Linden Hall) in Intermediate flat, sophomore Anni Field (Clinton, WA/South Whidbey) in Novice fences, seniors Kate Matthews (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and Stephanie Detwiler (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) in Advanced Walk Trot Canter, and sophomore Cherise Madrid (Braintree, MA/Braintree) in Walk Trot. Sophomore Rena DiPaula (Westminster, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) placed second in Novice fences.
The Gophers will have one weekend off, before heading to Towson University on Oct. 22 for their next intercollegiate competition.
