Determined Gophers Ace First Landmark TestKramer Supplies Goal That Produces 1-0 Victory
Sept. 22, 2007
TOWSON, Md. - What Goucher did this afternoon in Gopher Stadium in its inaugural Landmark Conference contest was something it was unable to do in its final seven years as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference - defeat a conference opponent.
But today, head coach Warren Prestwich's determined Gophers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kate Kramer (Alexandria, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) and then withstood a number of offensive attacks by their opponent to register a 1-0 victory over Drew.
Goucher (1-5, 1-0 Landmark) had dropped 36 consecutive conference games since a 3-2 triumph over St. Mary's (Md.) on Oct. 16, 1999.
Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, VA/The Madeira School) picked up an assist on Kramer's goal, which was scored midway through the first half. That still gave the Rangers (5-3, 0-1 Landmark) 52:22 to at least tie the score, but even though they finished with an 11-4 edge in shots, they were unable to put one in the net.
Three times, including once in the second half, they were denied by sophomore goalkie Aline Haddad (Bangor, PA/Bangor), who raised her save percentage this season to .836 and earned the first shutout of her career. In addition, Giovanna Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) came to the rescue at one point in the first half and prevented Drew from scoring by making a defensive save, the sixth of her career.
