Landmark Shines Spotlight on Goucher SophomoreThomas Earns Honor for Defensive Save vs. Drew
Sept. 24, 2007
TOWSON, Md. - For the major role she played in Goucher's 1-0 victory over Drew on Saturday, Giovanna Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) today was named Defensive Player of the Week for the sport of field hockey in the Landmark Conference. The award covers the period of Sept. 17-23.
Thomas prevented Drew from getting on the scoreboard first when she made a defensive save on one of the nine shots the Rangers got off in the first half. It was the sophomore's second defensive save of the season and sixth of her young career.
The win was significant for Goucher in that it was the Gophers' first of the season and even historical since it was the inaugural Landmark Conference contest for both teams. In addition, it was Goucher's first win over a conference opponent since the Gophers defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 3-2, on Oct. 16, 1999.
