Oct. 20, 2007
SCRANTON, Pa. - Goucher was able to slice a two-goal deficit down to one on two separate occasions in today's Landmark Conference game against Scranton. The Royals never did surrender the lead, however, and were able to hang on for a 4-2 victory.
Trailing 2-0, the Gophers (3-10, 2-3 Landmark) got on the scoreboard for the first time on a goal by Lindsey Frost (Columbia, MD/Hammond) with 20:56 left to play in the first half. A little over three minutes later, Scranton (5-11, 2-4 Landmark) went ahead 3-1 on a goal by Charleigh LaFronz-Emberger.
The Gophers were awarded only two penalty corners the entire contest, but one of them produced their second goal. Giovanna Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) and Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) were both credited with assists on the goal by Allison Metzger (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) that made the score 3-2 with 14:32 remaining before halftime.
Before the first half ended, the Royals regained a two-goal advantage on an unassisted goal by LaFronz-Emberger.
Neither team was able to score in the second half.
Scranton finished with a 26-6 edge in shots, forcing sophomore goalie Aline Haddad (Bangor, PA/Bangor) of the Gophers to make 14 saves. Three Goucher players - Thomas, Barbara Koziel (Holland Twp., NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) and Jess Wurzbacher (Lutherville, MD/Towson) - made defensive saves in support of Haddad.
