TOWSON, Md. – Goucher clung to a 1-0 advantage over Hood for nearly 32 minutes this afternoon before padding its lead three times over the final 19:07 and recording a 4-0 victory over the Blazers.
Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) set up a goal by Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) midway through the first half that provided the Gophers (4-10) their 1-0 lead.
Goucher didn't score again until the second half. Laura Groomes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) put the Gophers ahead 2-0 when she tallied her first goal of the season at 50:53. An unassisted goal by Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) at 58:25 made it 3-0 and Katie Skojec (Columbia, Md./Hammond) closed out the scoring when she knocked one past Hood goalie Jen Lacy with 1:45 left to play.
Lindsey Frost (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Metzger were each awarded an assist in the second half. Frost's assist was on Groomes' goal and Metzger's was on Skojec's.
In raising their record at home this season to 3-2, the Gophers out-shot the Blazers (1-10), 22-2. Lacy finished with 13 saves, while freshman goalie Ellie Brown (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) earned the shutout for Goucher in only the second start of her collegiate career.
