TOWSON, Md. – Goucher managed to erase the first one-goal deficit it faced in today's game against visiting Frostburg St., but time ran out on head coach Warren Prestwich's Gophers before they could do it a second time. Therefore, the goal the Bobcats scored at 48:31 to snap a 1-1 tie turned out to be the game-winner in their 2-1 victory.
The two teams combined for just eight shots in the first half and the only one that counted was by Sammy Stalter, who tallied an unassisted goal just 9:04 into the contest to put the Bobcats (13-3) ahead 1-0.
Goucher pulled even 4:10 into the second period when Laura Groomes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) notched her second goal of the season. The goal was set up by Sara Spadnuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) and was the culmination of one of the five penalty corners the Gophers (4-12) were awarded in the game.
The Gophers have now capitalized on a penalty corner to score at least one goal in four straight games.
Frostburg's final game by Sami Topolski also occured on a penalty corner.
The Bobcats finished with a 21-7 edge in shots and were awarded a total of 11 penalty corners.
Freshman Chloe Dircks (Williamstown, Mass./Williston Northhampton) started in goal for Goucher and made a career-high 13 saves.
