TOWSON, Md. – Goucher got on the scoreboard first and also produced the final goal of today's Landmark Conference game against Scranton in Gopher Stadium, but it was the three goals in between that allowed the Royals to head back home with a 3-2 victory.
The Gophers (4-13, 0-5 Landmark) took a 1-0 lead just 1:31 into the contest on a goal by Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden) that was set up by Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). It was the second goal of the junior midfielder's career and the fifth assist this season for the sophomore defender.
The Gophers nearly made it to halftime still leading 1-0, but the Royals (9-8, 3-3 Landmark) pulled into a 1-1 tie with 4:49 remaining in the opening period on a goal by Diana Rocklein.
Neither team scored again until Scranton went ahead for the first time on a goal by Tara Winter at 57:32 and then added to its lead with a goal by Corrie Szapka at 61:43.
An unassisted goal by Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) reduced Scranton's lead to 3-2, but left the Gophers with less than four minutes to try to manufacture another goal and send the game into overtime.
The Gophers finished with an 11-8 edge in shots.
