Gophers Down Owls for First Season-Opening Win Since 2002
BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The odds of Goucher starting out a
season with a victory for the first time since 2002 increased with
each goal Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren
Hills) scored today.
The Gophers had already opened up a 2-0 advantage over Bryn Mawr before Spadanuta notched her first goal of the contest with 10:14 left to play in the first half. She struck again 4:59 later as head coach Warren Prestwich's troops enjoyed a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Spadanuta, who scored three goals the entire season in 2008, picked up her third of the day when she tallied the only goal of the second half in a 5-0 triumph over the Owls (0-1) which ended a string of six consecutive season-opening setbacks for the Gophers. Ironically, Goucher's last win in the first game of a season was also 5-0 over Bryn Mawr back on August 31, 2002.
Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, Va./The Madeira School) and Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden) scored Goucher's first two goals. Katie Kramer (Alexandria, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional), who later picked up an assist on Spadanuta's second goal, set up Cadwallender's goal just 3:33 into the contest. Katie Gallagher (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) also finished with a pair of assists – one on Copan's goal at 17:31 that made the score 2-0 and the other on the first of Spadanuta's trio of goals.
Allison Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was awarded an assist on the final goal of the contest.
The Gophers (1-0) outshot the Owls, 26-0.
