Gophers Achieve First 2-0 Start Since 1995
TOWSON, Md. Goucher achieved its first 2-0 start to a season in 14 years tonight by downing Notre Dame (Md.), 6-0, in the first intercollegiate field hockey game played on the new synthetic turf at Beldon Field.
Two Goals for Copan, Gallagher in 6-0 Triumph Over Gators
TOWSON, Md. – Goucher achieved its first 2-0 start to a
season in 14 years tonight by downing Notre Dame (Md.), 6-0, in the
first intercollegiate field hockey game played on the new synthetic
turf at Beldon Field.
It was also the first home night game in the history of Goucher's field hockey program.
Only 2:35 separated the three goals the Gophers put on the scoreboard against the Gators (0-1) in the first half. Katie Kramer (Alexandria, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) put Goucher ahead 1-0 with a goal at 17:39 and, just :30 later, she was awarded an assist on a goal by Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden). Copan set up the third goal of the period, which was scored by Katie Gallagher (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) at 20:14.
The 3-0 score held up for nearly 30 minutes until, with 10:41 left to play, Allison Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) tallied an unassisted goal. The final two goals of the contest were scored by Copan at 67:19 and Gallagher at 69:57.
Kramer picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season on Gallagher's goal with :03 remaining.
In the first two games of the season, the Gophers (2-0) have outshot their opponents, 61-1.
The last time Goucher opened a season with two victories was 1995 when the Gophers defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 4-0, and Bridgewater, 1-0, on the way to a 13-4-2 record.
