Manheimer Stops Penalty Stroke, Makes Career-High 13 Saves
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher and Catholic were locked in a
scoreless tie at the conclusion of regulation today, even though
the Cardinals used the 70 minutes to build up a 23-0 advantage in
shots.
Ironically, in overtime, shots were even, with each team getting off two of them. The only one that really mattered, though, was the one by Kendall Petschauer that produced the only goal of the contest and allowed the Cardinals to come out on top, 1-0, in Landmark Conference action.
The Gophers (4-8, 0-3 Landmark) were awarded their first penalty corner of the game 3:06 into overtime and it led to shots by Allison Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden). Metzger's shot was blocked and goalie Marian Cassilly of the Cardinals made her only save of the day on Copan's attempt.
Goucher was whistled for an infraction 4:48 into OT and Catholic (7-2, 2-0 Landmark) got off a pair of shots on the ensuing penalty corner. Goalie Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) turned away the first attempt by Carley Walko for her career-high 13th save of the contest, but Walko got the ball back and found a cutting Petschauer, who placed the ball in the lower right corner.
Manheimer kept the game scoreless when she stopped a penalty stroke by Catholic's Kathryn Morris with 7:16 remaining in the second half and then made three of her saves on shots that the Cardinals took during a pair of penalty corners they were awarded after time expired in regulation.
