Mustangs Prevail in Second Round of Strokes
TOWSON, Md. If Goucher could have capitalized on just one more of the scoring opportunities it was presented during regulation or the 13-6 advantage in shots it enjoyed during the two overtime periods, today's game against Stevenson would have never even made it to penalty strokes. It eventually took two full round of strokes to determine a winner: Stevenson, 2-1.
Copan Converts Attempts in Both Rounds for Goucher
TOWSON, Md. — If Goucher could have capitalized on just one
more of the scoring opportunities it was presented during
regulation or the 13-6 advantage in shots it enjoyed during the two
overtime periods, today's game against Stevenson would have never
even made it to penalty strokes. It eventually took two full round
of strokes to determine a winner: Stevenson, 2-1.
The game went to strokes after the two teams traded goals in the second half and the score was deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation. The first round of strokes produced a 2-2 tie with Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) and Marissa Copan (Golden, Colo./Golden) both making their attempts for Goucher.
Copan was successful again in the second round, but the Mustangs (4-9) came out on top in the stroke-off when Sarah Bauer converted on her team's final attempt.
Following a scoreless first half, the Gophers (4-10) grabbed a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Katie Kramer (Alexandria, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) just 3:49 into the second period. Stevenson was limited to one shot the entire second half, but the Mustangs made it count as Katelyn Manocheh scored with 4:41 remaining in regulation.
Kara Zimmerman, who started in goal for Stevenson, made five saves on the eight shots the Gophers were able to get off in the first 15-minute extra session. Zimmerman made four additional saves in the second OT, boosting her final total to 13.
All four of the shots the Mustangs took in the second overtime were dangerous: sophomore goalie Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) made saves on three of them, including a penalty stroke by Manocheh. Manochech took another shot in the period that would have ended the game were it not for a defensive save by Barb Koziel (Holland, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional). The junior defender now ranks second all by herself in the history of Goucher's field hockey program with 18 defensive saves during her career. Going into today's game, she was tied with Jeannie Gosheff (1998-2001).
