Koziel Closes to Within Six of All-Time Leader in Defensive Saves
TOWSON, Md. — It was raining everything but goals today on
Beldon Field as Goucher and Moravian were squaring off in Landmark
Conference action. Although they were limited to five shots the
entire contest, the Greyhounds came out on top, 1-0.
The game's only goal was scored midway through the first half by Moravian's Maureen Helfers.
The Greyhounds (7-8, 2-2 Landmark) were able to maintain the 1-0 lead over the final 49:29, but head coach Warren Prestwich's squad had a number of scoring opportunities in the second half. The Gophers (4-11, 0-5 Landmark) were awarded a penalty stroke with just under 10 minutes left to play, but were unable to convert the attempt, and they also got off two close-in shots with approximately eight minutes remaining, both of which field players from Moravian had to stop from going in.
Goucher's Barb Koziel (Holland, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) also made a defensive save in the second half to keep the score at 1-0. It was the 19th defensive save the junior defender has made in her three seasons with the Gophers and she now trails Jen Madera, the all-time leader in defensive saves in the history of the school's field hockey program, by six.
