Manheimer Stops Stroke, Makes Three Additional Saves
TOWSON, Md. — Nine of the 17 shots Goucher got off today against Frostburg St. were on goal, but only one of them got past goalie Maggie Edwards as the Bobcats were able to knock off head coach Warren Prestwich's Gophers, 3-1.
The Bobcats (2-3) led 2-0 at the end of the first half thanks to goals by Becky Ranel and Breanne Russell, but the Gophers got on the scoreboard 8:58 into the second half on a goal by Angela Buxton (Springfield, Mass./Central). Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) set up the goal by Buxton, who unleashed a blistering shot from the top of the circle through a large crowd.
From the time Buxton scored to make it a one-goal game and Russell tallied her second goal of the contest with only 6:50 left to play to bump Frostburg's lead up to 3-1, the Gophers (1-2) held the upper hand offensively, outshooting the Bobats, 5-1. But Edwards made four of her final total of eight saves during that stretch which lasted 19:12.
Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) started in goal for Goucher and made four saves, including a sprawling stop on a penalty stroke by Brooke Tapman in the first half.
