Two Goals Apiece for Spadanuta, Metzger in 6-0 Triumph
TOWSON, Md. — Four different players got into the scoring act for Goucher today as the Gophers erupted for five goals in the second half on the way to a decisive 6-0 victory over Hood.
Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) provided the Gophers with a 1-0 advantage when she finished off a penalty corner by scoring her first goal of the season with 14:11 remaining in the first half.
The 1-0 score held up until another penalty corner spawned a goal by Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) 13:57 into the second half, which was followed less than three minutes later by a successful penalty stroke by Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, Va./The Madeira School).
Goucher's lead grew to 4-0 when a hard shot by Metzger deflected high in the air, over the head of Hood's goalie and into the net at 53:28, to 5-0 when Angela Buxton (Springfield, Mass./Central) put in her own rebound at 58:22, and finally to 6-0 when Spadanuta scored again by taking a shot from the top of the circle.
This is the second time the Gophers have scored as many as six goals in a game during head coach Warren Prestwich's five-year tenure at the school. The last time a Goucher team surpassed six goals in a game was a 7-0 triumph over Wesley back on Oct. 7, 1994.
The Gophers unleashed a season-high total of 25 shots, while limiting the Blazers (0-5) to five. Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) started in goal for Goucher and made four saves before being replaced with 10:03 left to play.
