Metzger Delivers Goal in First Half, Ties Armao for Team Lead
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher nursed a 1-0 lead for nearly 34 minutes and then clung to a 1-1 tie for more than 29 minutes only to have Randolph-Macon score a goal 1:42 into overtime tonight to come away with a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Gophers.
Even though the Gophers (2-5) were outshot 9-2 in the opening 35:00, they were ahead 1-0 at the end of the first half thanks to an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). She ripped a long shot from the top of the circle through a large crowd and into the goal 9:39 into the contest.
The goal was Metzger's third of the season, which ties her with senior forward Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) for the team lead.
Junior Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), who started in goal for the Gophers, kept Randolph-Macon off the scoreboard throughout the first half by turning away six shots. She made her seventh save of the contest on a dangerous shot by Mary McCarthy 7:30 into the second period, but less than a minute later, the Yellow Jackets (5-4) were able to put one past Manheimer as Lauren Seal knocked in her own rebound.
Seal was again the culprit in overtime as she took the ball away from a Goucher player near midfield and turned it into a 1-on-1 opportunity with Manheimer, who came out to cut down the angle. Seal deked the goalie, who laid sprawling at the top of the arc, which gave Seal an empty net in which to deposit the game-ending goal.
The Gophers had the first chance to score in overtime. On their opening possession, they were awarded a penalty corner, which led to a dangerous shot by Metzger that was stopped by Randolph-Macon's Nicole Woodworth for her only save of the contest.
