BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher's Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) made 15 saves through 70 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods this afternoon, matching her career-high for a single game, but the junior goalie's day was still not over. That's because the Gophers were remained locked in a 2-2 tie with Moravian in a Landmark Conference game.
So she went right back out and stopped all three of the Greyhounds' attempts during the subsequent stroke-off, which allowed the Gophers to secure a highly satisfying 3-2 victory.
The Greyhounds (5-8, 0-4 Landmark) managed to solve Manheimer just once in the first half, but Vita Ranella's unassisted goal with :24 remaining in the period had Moravian up 1-0 at the break.
The Gophers (4-9, 1-4 Landmark) pulled even when senior forward Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season 15:22 into the second half. Senior forward Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, Va./The Madeira School) was awarded an assist on the goal.
The 1-1 lasted for just over seven minutes until Moravian regained the lead on an unassisted goal by Briana Van Buskirk, but with only 9:52 remaining in regulation, an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Angela Buxton (Springfield, Mass./Central) created a 2-2 tie.
Manheimer's saves total stood at seven at the end of regulation, but she made plays on two Moravian shots in the first OT and on all six shots the Greyhounds got off in the second extra session. Catherine Gottlieb, who went the distance in goal opposite Manheimer, had six saves to her credit during regulation and stopped an additional four shots in overtime.
Goucher was successful on its first two attempts in the stroke-off as freshman forward Eden Fitzkee (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and sophomore midfielder/defender Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) both got shots past Gottlieb. After a third straight miss by Moravian, the Gophers needed only a make by senior midfielder Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) to wrap up the win and she delivered.
