Cadwallender Picks Up Assists on Goals by Fitzkee, Metzger
BALTIMORE, Md. — Goucher unleashed a season-high total of 43 shots today and prevented its opponent from getting off a single shot the entire game. The result: a 2-0 victory for the Gophers over Notre Dame (Md.).
This marks the third year in a row that one of Goucher's opponents failed to attempt at least one shot in a game against the head coach Warren Prestwich's squad. It happened last year when the Gophers opened their season with a 5-0 victory over Bryn Mawr and outshot the Owls, 26-0, and in 2008 in a 2-0 triumph over Notre Dame when shots were 21-0 in Goucher's favor.
The 25 shots that the Gophers (5-10) got off in the first half of today's game generated only one goal. Freshman forward Eden Fitzkee (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs) tallied her third goal of the season midway through the period when she tapped in a pass from senior forward Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, Va./The Madeira School).
Cadwallender was also awarded an assist on Goucher's second goal, scored by senior midfielder Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) with 4:16 left to play. The goal was Metzger's fifth of the season, moving her into a tie with senior forward Catherine Armao (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) for the team lead.
For the Gators (0-16), Emily Langton played all 70 minutes in goal and finished with 24 saves.
