Gophers Unable to Capitalize on 15-11 Advantage in Shots
STEVENSON, Md. — Goucher finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and was awarded more than twice as many penalty corners as Stevenson tonight, but where it mattered the most — the scoreboard — the Mustangs came out on top, 2-0.
Following a scoreless first half in which the two starting goalies made a combined total of eight saves, the Gophers (5-11) had several chances to take the lead in the opening six minutes of the second period. Sophmore midfielder/defender Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional), senior forward Mary Cadwallender (Fredericksburg, Va./The Madeira School) and senior midfielder Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) all got off shots during that stretch, but goalie Kara Zimmerman of the Mustangs made plays on each attempt.
Junior goalie Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) of the Gophers didn't have to make her first save of the second half until more than 19 minutes had run off the clock, but she was able to turn away a shot by Stevenson's Brittany Martin. Unfortunately, the rebound went right back to Martin, who reloaded and this time poked the ball past Manheimer and into the cage with 15:19 left to play.
The Mustangs (9-10) were awarded only five penalty corners the entire contest compared to 11 for the Gophers, but one of them produced a goal by Shelby Ballew that put the home team up 2-0 with 12:17 remaining.
Zimmerman earned the shutout by making 10 saves; Manheimer ended the game with five.
