Spadanuta Puts Goucher Up 1-0 with 12th Career Goal
TOWSON, Md. — It took longer than 70 minutes to determine the winner between Goucher and Scranton in today's battle for fifth place in the Landmark Conference. The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie when time expired in the second half, but just 1:19 into overtime, Kaitlyn Tirney's unassisted goal provided the Royals with an immediate 2-1 victory.
It was the final game of the season for both teams.
The Gophers (5-12, 1-5 Landmark) dominated play throughout most of the first half and they had a 7-1 edge in shots and a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard after 45 minutes to show for their efforts. The goal was off a penalty corner, which started with senior midfielder Sara Spadanuta (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills) inserting the ball into play and setting up a shot by senior midfielder Ali Metzger (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). Metzger's attempt was blocked out front, but the rebound went to sophomore midfielder Angela Buxton (Springfield, Mass./Central), who chipped a pass that Spadanuta slashed in midair, directly into the cage.
The goal was Spadanuta's fourth of the season and 12th of her career.
Corrine O'Kane's unassisted goal with 18:03 left to play allowed the Royals (7-12, 2-4 Landmark) to pull even at 1-1.
The only shot by either team in overtime was the one by Tirney that turned into the game-winning goal. The Gophers finished with a 9-5 advantage in shots.
