Benzel Makes Run at Single-Game School Record for Assists
TOWSON, Md. — Two games into the season, Goucher has yet to surrender a goal. The Gophers, in fact, haven't allowed either of their first two opponents to get off a shot.
Shots were 35-0 in favor of head coach Whitney Raffo's squad this evening when the Gophers (2-0) rolled to a convincing 6-0 triumph over Cedar Crest on Beldon Field.
Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) scored twice for Goucher as she provided the home team with a 1-0 lead 19:13 into the contest and then stuck the final goal with 8:45 left to play. Liz Weiner (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and Rachel Ward (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) tallied goals just 5:34 apart late in the first half as the Gophers walked off the field after 35:00 with a 3-0 advantage.
Goucher's fourth and fifth goals were knocked in by Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) and Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School), respectively.
Taylor Benzel (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) made a run at the school record for assists in a game. She set up Weiner's goal in the first half and two of the goals the Gophers added in the second period, but the single-game record for assists is four, established by Meredith Brown in a 6-1 victory over York on Sept. 15, 1994.
