Ruhlin Ends Non-Conference Contest with Goal 7:50 into OT
BRYN MAWR, Pa. — An unassisted goal by Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) 7:50 into overtime provided Goucher with a 1-0 triumph over Bryn Mawr, allowing the Gophers to remain undefeated and unscored upon so far in 2011.
Even though the Gophers (3-0) outshot the Owls, 20-3, during regulation, the contest was deadlocked at 0-0 after 70 minutes. The visitors continued to pepper goalie Elizabeth Toft during overtime, getting off another eight shots before the freshman midfielder/forward tallied her team-leading third goal of the season.
Seconds earlier, Toft made her 18th save on a shot by Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional), but Ruhlin was there to knock in the rebound.
Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), who went the distance in goal for Goucher, wasn't kept nearly as busy as her counterpart. In fact, after the Gophers outshot their first two opponents, 65-0, the senior goalie faced her first shot and made her first save of the season 3:34 into today's non-conference clash.
In picking up the seventh shutout of her career, Manheimer finished with five saves, including two in OT.
Gallagher also came to Manheimer's rescue during the extra session by making a defensive save on a shot by Bryn Mawr's Manya Steinfeld.
By knocking off the Owls (0-3), the Gophers are 3-0 for only the second time since they opened with six consecutive victories on the way to a 13-4-2 record in 1995. Ironically, they defeated the same three teams — Bryn Mawr, Cedar Crest and Notre Dame (Md.) — in 2009.
