TOWSON, Md. — Goucher went into tonight's game against York undefeated and unscored upon, but the Spartans needed less than nine minutes to snap the scoreless streak.
The unbeaten streak was quick to follow as the Spartans exploded for five additional goals to earn a convincing 6-0 victory over head coach Whitney Raffo's Gophers.
Goucher trailed in a game for the first time this season when Jillian Brezgel scored 8:48 into tonight's contest. Sandee Reich, who set up Brezgel's goal, tallied one of her own approximatelty 10 minutes later to bump York's lead up to 2-0.
Katie Blankenstein closed out the scoring in the first half when she stuck a goal with 5:16 remaining in the period and then made it a 4-0 game with another goal 2:13 into the second half.
Kailey Brewer and Kirsten Bridgers also scored in the second half for the Spartans (3-1), who unleashed a total of 31 shots. The Gophers (3-1) were unable to get a shot off and were awarded only one penalty corner the entire contest.
Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), who was called on to make only three saves even though she played every minute of the first three games of the season in goal for Goucher, turned away 13 shots tonight. Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) also denied the Spartans three times — all in the first half — by making defensive saves in support of Manheimer.
The single-game school record for defensive saves is four and was established in 2003 by Bridie Crook.
