Royals Click on Offense, Pin 5-0 Setback on Gophers

Manheimer Makes Career-High 17 Saves in Landmark Opener
SCRANTON, Pa. — Despite a career-high 17-save performance by senior goalie Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), Goucher suffered a 5-0 setback to Scranton this afternoon in the first Landmark Conference game of the season for both teams.
Manheimer, who has appeared in a total of 49 games during her four seasons with the Gophers, had never made more than 15 saves prior to today.
The Royals (6-1, 1-0 Landmark) struck for three goals in the opening 35:00, taking a 1-0 advantage just 6:47 into the contest on an unassisted goal by Alicia Tamboia and then lengthening their advantage to 2-0 at 14:28 on an unassisted goal by Gretchen Kempf.
Caitlin Liberatore closed out the scoring in the first half when she knocked in a shot from 15 yards out with 4:24 left to play.
It took the Royals more than 25:00 to notch their first goal of the second half, although they were denied just 2:26 into the period when Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) made a defensive save on a shot by Kempf. It was the freshman midfielder/forward's second defensive save of the season.
An unassisted goal by Cssie Mullen at 61:05 upped Scranton's lead to 4-0 and Kempf, who unleashed a total of 11 shots, stuck her second goal of the contest at 66:21.
The Gophers (4-3, 0-1 Landmark) were limited to two shots, both in the second half and both by freshman midfielder/forward Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley).
