No. 14 Cardinals Pin 10-0 Setback on Gophers
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) became the first Goucher goalie to make at least 20 saves in a game in more than four years when she stopped 20 shots in tonight's Landmark Conference game against Catholic. Unfortunately, her career-high performance didn't translate into a victory for the Gophers, who instead bowed to the nationally ranked Cardinals, 10-0.
Manheimer Stops Two Penalty Strokes, Makes Career-High 20 Saves
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) became the first Goucher goalie to make at least 20 saves in a game in more than four years when she stopped 20 shots in tonight's Landmark Conference game against Catholic. Unfortunately, her career-high performance didn't translate into a victory for the Gophers, who instead bowed to the nationally ranked Cardinals, 10-0.
Catholic, which is currently No. 14 in the 2011 Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III national rankings, didn't score its first goal until 18:24 had elapased, but was able to tack on four additional goals before time expired in the first half. Colleen Harwood tallied four of the goals in the opening 35 minutes of the contest, including one that was the result of a penalty stroke.
The Cardinals (9-1, 3-0 Landmark) put five more goals on the scoreboard in the second half, starting with back-to-back goals by Katie Bertrand at 41:35 and 50:10. Mary Swarthout, who had two assists earlier in the game, delivered Catholic's ninth goal at 58:55 via the penalty stroke.
The Gophers (4-6, 0-3 Landmark) were limited to one shot, an attempt by Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) with less than two minutes left to play that goalie Alison Dillard of the Cardinals was able to turn away to preserve her shutout.
Catholic unleashed a total of 42 shots.
The 20 saves by Manheimer is the most by a Goucher goalie since Aline Haddad was crediting with making plays on 28 shots in a 9-0 loss to Susquehanna back on Sept. 29, 2007.
Two of Manheimer's saves were on penalty strokes. In addition, Hannah Phillips (Morrisville, Pa./George School) recorded a defensive save for the Gophers, her first of the season.
