Mustangs Never Relinquish Lead, Knock Off Gophers
TOWSON, Md. — After not being able to get off a single shot in the first half, Goucher turned it up several notches on offense in the final 35 minutes of today's game against Stevenson. The extra effort was rewarded in the form of an unassisted goal by Rachel Ward (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), but the Gophers still fell short on the scoreboard as the Mustangs prevailed 3-1.
Gallagher Makes Defensive Save, Boosts Total for Season to Six
TOWSON, Md. — After not being able to get off a single shot in the first half, Goucher turned it up several notches on offense in the final 35 minutes of today's game against Stevenson. The extra effort was rewarded in the form of an unassisted goal by Rachel Ward (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), but the Gophers still fell short on the scoreboard as the Mustangs prevailed 3-1.
Stevenson bunched all three of its goals into the opening period. Kaitlyn May staked the Mustangs (4-10) to a 1-0 advantage when she tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season just 3:28 into the contest.
May scored again at 13:24, extending Stevenson's lead to 2-0, and the Mustangs' third goal of the first half was tallied by Ashley Beam at 22:12.
The Gophers (4-8), who unleashed 11 shots in the second half, closed to within 3-1 when Ward stuck her goal with exactly 16 minutes left to play.
Both starting goalies played all 70 minutes. For Stevenson, Kelsi Zimmerman made five saves, all in the second half; Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) was credited with seven saves for Goucher.
Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) registered her team-leading sixth defensive save of the season by turning away a shot by the Mustangs in the second half.
