Gallagher Remains Among Div. III Leaders in Defensive Saves
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher allowed another opportunity to end its lengthy losing streak get away by bowing at home to Richard Stockton, 6-0, tonight, leaving the Gophers only two more chances this season to pick up a much-needed victory.
The Gophers spotted the visiting Ospreys (8-5) a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Jenny Carpenter just 6:21 into the contest, but then didn't fall any further behind for the next 17 minutes until Alicia Leadbeater scored a goal and set up another by Susie Balidamaj less than three minutes apart as Richard Stockton enjoyed a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first half.
In the opening 10 minutes of the second period, the Ospreys increased their lead to 5-0 as Leadbeater picked up an assist on a goal by Nancy White and Carpenter added her second goal of the game.
Brittany Iveson closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 10:59 left to play.
Even though the Gophers (4-10), who have lost nine consecutive games since a 1-0 triumph over Albright on Sept. 17, got off three more shots than their opponents in the second half, the Ospreys still finished with a 20-14 edge in that category.
Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) started in goal for Goucher and made nine saves, raising the senior's career total to 346.
In addition, Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) made her team-leading seventh defensive save of the season for the Gophers on a shot by Megan Irving in the second half. According to NCAA statistics covering games played through Oct. 16, only 12 Division III field hockey players throughout the nation had more defensive saves than Gallagher.
