Greyhounds Stay in Contention for Berth in Playoffs
TOWSON, Md. — After 50 minutes, the scoreboard showed zeroes for both Goucher and Moravian in a Landmark Conference game being played this afternoon on Beldon Field. One reason the contest was still scoreless at that point was because the Gophers had been able to get off only one shot; another was that their goalkeeper was already approaching double digits in saves.
Gallagher Makes Two Defensive Saves for Goucher in Second Half
The Greyhounds, who needed a win to remain in contention for a berth in the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament, ended the 0-0 stalemate when Chelsea Grotyohann succesfully converted a penalty stroke at 53:57. Just 1:33 later, Taylor Holly tacked on an unassisted goal, concluding the scoring in what turned out to be a 2-0 victory for Moravian.
In between the two goals, senior goalie Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) recorded two more saves, raising her total for the game to 11, plus Katie Gallagher (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) made a defensive save for the Gophers (4-11, 0-6 Landmark).
After the Greyhounds (9-6, 2-3 Landmark) assumed the 2-0 lead, Manheimer made two additional saves over the final 14:30 as she finished with 13. Gallagher made a second defensive save, raising her team-leading total for the season to nine.
In the first half, Hannah Philips (Morrisville, Pa./George School) registered her third defensive save of the season.
In their final home game of 2011, the Gophers were outshot 27-1.
