OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Only three players scored goals in Goucher's season-opening game against Stevenson tonight. Unfortunately for the Gophers, all three individuals who got into the scoring act were playing for the other team and each one tallied a pair of goals as the Mustangs rolled to a 6-0 victory.
The Mustangs (1-0) did all their scoring in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead just 7:01 into the contest on a goal by Alison Kagel. Kaitlyn May's unassisted goal at 14:18 made the score 2-0; Alyson Moody added to Stevenson's total at 17:57 when she directed a teammate's shot into the goal.
Moody notched her second goal at 23:25 and Kagel and May followed suit within the next seven minutes.
The Gophers (0-1) were limited to two shots in the opening 35 minutes and a total of five for the entire game.
Shelby Cross (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) prevented a goal by Stevenson when the score was still just 1-0 by making a defensive save in support of her goalie on a shot by Ariella Hopp in the box.
Later in the period, Hopp denied the Gophers a goal by making a defensive save on a shot by Caroline Less (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) from close right wing.
