Ruhlin Contributes Three Goals, Assist to 5-0 Triumph
BRYN MAWR, Pa. — Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) had a hand in four of the five goals as Goucher knocked off Notre Dame (Md.), 5-0, today to finish in third place at the Bryn Mawr College Tournament.
Ruhlin, Goucher's leading scorer in 2011 with a total of five goals, put the Gophers (2-2) up 1-0 when she tallied her second goal this season 14:46 into the contest. Approxmately eight minutes later, she and Lindsay Jones (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) were both awarded assists on a goal by Taylor Benzel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville).
Goucher opened up a 3-0 advantage over the Gators (0-3) when Ruhlin scored again with 5:27 remaining in the first half.
Just 2:08 into the second half, Bari Gilbert (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) notched her first goal of the season, extending Goucher's lead to 4-0.
Ruhlin closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:33 left to play, becoming the first Goucher player to score more than two goals in a game since Sara Spadanuta's three-goal effort against Bryn Mawr on Sept. 2, 2009.
The Gophers, who placed Ruhlin, Jones and Liz Weiner (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) on the all-tournament team, finished with a commanding 37-2 edge in shots.
Hannah Phillips (Morrisville, Pa./George School) preserved the shutout for Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville). Even though the freshman goalie didn't have to make a single save, she needed a defensive save by Phillips on a shot by Notre Dame's Soumya Chigurupati with under two minutes remaining to keep the Gators off the scoreboard.
