Highest Total for Freshman Goalie Since Hadded in 2006
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was on the short end of a 34-4 edge in shots today and the result was a 4-0 loss to Scranton in the first Landmark Conference game of the season for both teams.
Exactly 15 minutes into the contest, the Royals (3-3, 1-0 Landmark) had attempted all seven shots and been awarded both penalty corners, but it was still scoreless. That changed, however, when Cassie Mullen carried the ball from 25 yards out by herself, shaking a defender, and scoring into the lower right corner with 19:55 left to play in the first half.
Gretchen Kempf, who led all shooters with 12 attempts on net, doubled the lead just before the half, tapping in a loose ball in an empty net, then made the lead 3-0 early in the second period on a scramble. Meaghan Kearney rounded out the scoring for the Royals on a scramble with approximately 15 minutes remaining.
For the Gophers (2-4, 0-1 Landmark), four different players were credited with one shot apiece, all in the first half.
In net, Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville) finished with 15 saves for the Gophers, the highest total for a freshman goalie since Aline Haddad stopped 16 shots against Salisbury on October 29, 2006.
With Scranton consistently on the attack, Huffman was called upon to make multiple saves on loose balls in the circle. The first-year player stopped four shots in a 13-second span to keep the game scoreless in the first minute. Immediately after the first goal, the Royals were on the attack again, ripping five shots in 11 seconds, two of which were on cage.
In the second half, Huffman had three saves in 12 seconds to keep the Gophers within striking distance.
