Gophers Hold 14-6 Edge in Second Half Shots
TOWSON Md. — It took five consecutive penalty corners and six consecutive shots, but a dominating sequence by the Gophers finally resulted in a goal, giving the home team the win.
After a scoreless first half, the second period opened with a penalty corner in the favor of the Blazers. Immediately thereafter, over a span of 4:15, Goucher (3-4) earned five straight penalty corners without letting Hood (1-5) escape its zone.
On the first four corners of the sequence, the ball came out to Caroline Less (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) on each ocassion, with Less drawing additional corners each time.
On the team's fifth try, the ball instead came out to Lindsay Jones (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School), who fired off a pair of shots that were saved. Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley), who inserted the ball on each of the five corners, finally was able to clean up a loose ball to give the Gophers a well-earned goal.
Goucher earned the game's next corner as well, and, after a second infraction, capitalized again off the set piece. Ruhlin, after inserting, got two shots off with the ball again coming free. Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) put home a the loose ball on the rebound to give the Gophers a safer cushion.
All of Hood's seven shots on net were turned away by freshman goalkeeper Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville). Huffman now has a shutout in each of Goucher's three wins this season.
