TOWSON, Md. — It's never a good time to be without the services of your starting goalie, but it's even more of an issue when you are facing a nationally ranked opponent.
That's the dire situation Goucher found itself in this afternoon when it hosted Catholic on Beldon Field. The Gophers were minus the goalie who had started the first eight games of the season; the Cardinals, who came in tied with Drew for first place in the Landmark Conference, were at No. 12 in the lastest Division III national rankings.
As might be expected, Catholic cruised to a 10-0 victory.
Three players accounted for the first seven goals, all of which were scored before the contest was even 26 minutes old. Tara Portland opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 5:38 and would add a second one at 10:59. Hayley Wright tallied the goals that put the Cardinals (8-3, 3-0 Landmark) ahead 2-0 at 6:45 and 7-0 at 25:13; in between Wright's two goals, Taylor Elliott deposited three balls into the cage.
The first half ended with Catholic ahead 8-0 thanks to a 27-0 advantage in shots.
The Gophers (3-6, 0-3 Landmark) got off only one shot the entire contest and that was after the Cardinals had stretched their lead to 10-0 in the second period.
Pressed into duty with the regular starter out of the lineup due to injury, sophomore Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) went the distance in goal for Goucher and responded with a 17-save effort. She becomes the first player in Landmark Conference history to record a save and a point in the same season.
