Goucher Finishes Game With 21-1 Shot Advantage
BALTIMORE — Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) became the first Goucher player since the school joined the NCAA, and the first player in Landmark Conference history, to record a goal and a save in net in the same game, helping the Gophers cruise 3-0.
In the first 107 seconds, the Gophers scored twice and cruised to a non-conference victory, holding Notre Dame (Md.) to a single shot.
Just 1:19 into the contest Bari Gilbert (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) found Meluskey on the doorstep, giving Goucher (4-9) the margin it needed to keep Notre Dame (0-14) winless.
An insurance goal came 28 second later as Goucher offensive pressure from Taylor Benzel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who carried the ball into the circle from the wing, led to a second goal.
Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford), who became the first player in Landmark Conference history with a point and save in the same season earlier this year, started her fifth straight game in net but did not face a shot in her 35 minutes. Meluskey, making her first career appearance in net, replaced Gill at halftime.
Early in the frame, the Gators got off their only shot off their penalty corner, but Meluskey shut the door on a high attempt, preserving the shutout and earning an exceedingly rare stat line.
After the two early goals, the two teams held each other at bay for nearly 50 minutes until Benzel put home a shot after receiving a pass from Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) to give the game its final scoreline, 3-0.
It was the first multi-goal effort in the sophomore's career.
