LEXINGTON, Va. – In the season opener for both teams, the Goucher field hockey team dropped a tight 2-0 decision to Roanoke Friday night at Washington and Lee. The Maroons managed single goals in each of the two halves, while the Gophers could not get anything past goalie Candice Fisher.
The Maroons controlled play in the opening 30 minutes, outshooting Goucher 7-0. Fluer Moorlag opened the scoring for Roanoke in the 19th minute, deflecting a shot past Huffman eight yards in front of the goal.
Goucher earned its first penalty corner with two minutes remaining in the opening half, and Danielle Hallacker and Megan Meluskey both managed shots on goal in the resulting scramble, but Fisher was up to the task to keep Roanoke in front.
The Maroons doubled their advantage on their first shot of the second half, with Kellie Jasinski taking a pass from Shannon McCarthy and directing a shot past Huffman. That turned out to be the only shot of the half for Roanoke. Goucher held a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners after the intermission but managed just three shots and could not find a goal.
The Gophers will remain in Lexington over the weekend, returning to action Sunday at Noon against host school Washington and Lee. The Generals fell 4-0 to Johns Hopkins earlier this afternoon in their season opener.
