TOWSON, Md. – Goucher's search for its elusive first win continued this afternoon at Beldon Field, with Bryn Mawr's Kayla Bixler scoring the game-winning goal with 1:23 left in double overtime to lift the Owls to a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Bryn Mawr (3-2) held a 13-4 shots advantage in the two overtime periods. Goalie Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville) made six saves to keep the Gophers in it, and had 10 saves overall in the match, but Bixler fired a low shot from the left side of the box to bring Goucher's record to 0-5.
Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) opened up the scoring for the Gophers eight minutes into the second half. Freshman Lizzie Barminski (Ventura, Calif./Buena) made a long run down the right side and crossed to a wide-open Ruhlin in front of the box. The junior forward converted for her fourth goal of the season. She has scored all of Goucher's goals thus far, and is only one away from matching her season total from last year. Barminski registered her second assist.
Goucher had 11 of the 16 total shots in the second 35 minutes, but the Owls were able to equalize with less than seven minutes remaining. In a scramble off of a penalty corner, Ashley Arbuckle sent a cross to Haley Newsham, who was able to stuff it into the goal and set up Bixler's overtime heroics.
Bryn Mawr ended the contest with a 25-20 edge in shots, while Goucher had a slim 11-10 lead in penalty corners. Barminski led the Gophers with seven shots, while Rachel Crain (Charlotte Hall, Md./Chopticon) added five.
Goucher will return to action Wednesday afternoon with a 5 p.m. matchup at Hood.
