Blue Jays Strike Five Times in Second Period
TOWSON, Md. — Through the first nine games of the season, Goucher allowed only one opponent to score more than two goals and it appeared that streak might reach 10 games when today's Landmark Conference contest against Elizabethtown reached the end of the first half with the two teams locked in a scoreless tie.
TOWSON, Md. — Through the first nine games of the season, Goucher allowed only one opponent to score more than two goals and it appeared that streak might reach 10 games when today's Landmark Conference contest against Elizabethtown reached the end of the first half with the two teams locked in a scoreless tie.
To get there, however, it took some superb work out of starting goalie Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville), who faced 16 shots in the opening 35 minutes and turned away all seven that were on goal.
The second half, it turned out, was a different story. The Blue Jays finally put one past Huffman 3:59 into the period and that seemed to open the floodgates as they went on to score four more times to earn a 5-0 victory over head coach Megan Williams' Gophers.
The first two goals Elizabethtown scored belonged to Andrea Keady and the second one followed the first by less than three minutes. It wasn't until a goal by Emily Mason with 12:05 left to play that Goucher fell behind 3-0.
Jacki Hikes and Nicole Leaf added goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest as the Blue Jays (6-5, 1-1 Landmark) finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots.
The Gophers (7-3, 1-1 Landmark) got off two shots following penalty corners in the final minute of the first half. The first one, taken by Lizzie Barminski (Ventura, Calif./Buena), was stopped by the opposing goalie, while the subsequent one was blocked out front.
Dating back to last season, Goucher had scored at least one goal in 12 consecutive games until today.
The Gophers return to action one week from today when they welcome Scranton to Beldon Field for another Landmark Conference contest, which will start at 1 p.m.
