SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Although it wasn't with a victory, Goucher's first winning season since 1995 came to a conclusion this afternoon with the Gophers bowing to Susquehanna, 2-1, and finishing in a four-way tie for fifth place in the Landmark Conference.
The contest remained scoreless the entire first half and the first 12 minutes of the second period before Karrie Hauck tipped a ball in from just outside the goal to put the Crusaders (7-10, 2-5 Landmark) up 1-0. Hauck scored again with 4:32 left to play to provide the home team with a two-goal advantage.
That left the Gophers (9-7, 2-5 Landmark) with enough time to get off three shots. The first one by Kristen Shklanko (Huntingdon Beach, Calif./Edison) went wide, the second by Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) was stopped by the opposing keeper and the third by Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) got head coach Megan Williams' team on the scoreboard. The goal, which came with only :56 showing on the clock, was the senior defender's first of the season and was assisted by Annie Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline).
By getting into the scoring act in the final game of her collegiate career, Gill became the 12th different player to supply the Gophers with at least one goal this season.
Goucher, which last finished above .500 when it went 13-4-2 in 1995, ended tied with Drew, Moravian and Susquehanna for fifth place in the Landmark Conference.
