TOWSON, Md. — Goucher improved to 9-1 this season when it scores the first goal of a game, which it did in today's 3-1 triumph over Drew.
In fact, the Landmark Conference game was less than three minutes old when Annie Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) found the back of the cage on Goucher's second shot of the day. Rachel Crain (Charlotte Hall, Md./Chopticon) passed the ball into the middle of the circle, where Carter pushed it past the opposing keeper.
The Gophers (9-4, 2-3 Landmark) outshot the Rangers 15-2 in the first half — holding onto the 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long, however, for the home team to stretch its advantage to 2-0 once the second half got under way. Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) drove right through the Drew defense and rocketed a shot into the net from just inside the blue circle 1:12 into the period. Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Preparatory School) tallied the third goal of the day for the Gophers with 27:41 remaining.
The Rangers (1-12, 0-5 Landmark) notched their only goal of the game when Huma Sheikh scored with 3:56 showing on the clock.
Goucher's defense swarmed to the ball throughout the entire game. Lizzie Barminski (Ventura, Calif./Buena) made a defensive save in the second half in support of her goalie, Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville), who finished with a pair of saves.
The Gophers return to action one week from today when they hop on the bus to play Juniata in Huntongdon, Pa. Starting time for the game is 5 p.m.
