September 14 - BALTIMORE, Md. It was a warm evening for a White Out, as hundreds of Goucher fans came out to support their Gophers. That support helped to lift the Gophers to a season-high five goal game and a win over the visiting Stevenson Mustangs.
Goucher got on the board early, thanks to a goal by sophomore Jackie Juarez off an assist by senior Annie Carter. It was Juarez’s first goal of the season, but wouldn’t be her last of the night.
Gophers senior Rachel Crain found the back of the net shortly thereafter, making the score 2 – 0, Goucher. Goucher and Stevenson traded goals for the remaining 60 minutes of the contest, with Goucher retaining their early lead throughout.
Juarez struck again in the first half from a pass from junior Emily Jewell. Scoring in the second half for Goucher were freshman Valerie Mendoza, with her first career goal, and junior Sarah Shklanko. Junior Olivia Dickert and senior Lizzie Barminski assisted those plays.
Junior goalkeeper Liz Zengel secured ten saves for the Gophers and Jewell nabbed a defensive save late in the second half.
“This was a total team effort and it is exciting to see us firing on all cylinders,” commented Coach Megan Williams.
The Gophers return to action this weekend with a doubleheader – Saturday at 1 p.m. at home versus the Richard Stockton Ospreys and then on the road on Sunday at Johns Hopkins University.
