Goucher Field Hockey Discusses GBBCC Stakeholders Award
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Goucher College field hockey team raised $650 for the Greater Baltimore Black Chambers of Commerce (GBBCC) over the summer. The GBBCC recognized the team's efforts with the GBBCC Stakeholders Award on a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
Senior Caroline Doll and junior Emily Postlethwait helped organize the fundraising efforts that was aided by post on the field hockey account. The team choose the GBBCC because that organization supported more than just one business.
"As a team, we saw how badly the pandemic was hitting small businesses, especially those that are Black-owned, so we decided to fundraise and help as much as we could," said Postlethwait. "Instead of choosing a single business, the GBBCC reaches as many people and their work as they possibly can, with the goal of fostering a community of support."
Postlethwait is proud of the efforts of the team and the recognition from the GBBCC, but she also recognizes the importance of supporting local businesses.
"I can say on behalf of Goucher field hockey that we are extremely honored to be recognized for the Stakeholders Award," said Postlethwait. "Our program makes it a priority to foster an environment in which everyone can thrive and grow. Yet, that doesn't stop within the confinements of our team. The people of Baltimore deserve every bit of recognition and support for the heart and soul that goes into their businesses. By shopping local or donating to organizations such as the GBBCC, we can help support, grow, and empower those whose voices may go unheard or unappreciated."
It was a team effort, but the players watched the ceremony individually or with their families who have supported them both on and off the field.
"The sense of community demonstrated in the ceremony was so heartening to see," said Postlethwait. "There is nothing greater than the relationships created with people who are there to support you and watch you grow. Getting to see the work, effort, and passion that goes on behind the scenes of the GBBCC shows that supporting Black businesses are only the start to combatting a system of inequality."
"The outcome of the fundraiser itself warmed my heart, and I am so grateful that so many people were able to donate anything they could in such a difficult time," said Postlethwait. "Being recognized at the GBBCC's 15th anniversary ceremony was an honor, both for Caroline and I to speak, and for our program as a whole. Overall, it was an incredible experience, and I look forward to the growth of Black-owned and operated businesses in the Baltimore area and beyond.
Doll stated during the ceremony, "We hope to continue working with the GBBCC in the future and continue to stay on the field with your amazing team."
