BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (1-1) defeated the Eastern Mennonite University Royals (0-2) in their home opener on Wednesday evening.
The Gophers started came out quick, scoring in the first 5 minutes into the game. Camden West found Charlotte Bloom at the top of the shooting circle where she notched her first goal of the season. A minute and a half later, West found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, as well. For the remainder of the quarter, the Gophers took 4 more shots, while EMU ended the first quarter with one shot on goal.
Not long into the second quarter, C. Bloom took a shot, which was followed 4 minutes later by Ava Barnes. At the end of the first half, Goucher recorded 10 shots.
Mimi Taff started the second half for the Gophers. Goucher's strong offense began the second half, similar to the first, adding 4 shots of the first 3 minutes. But the Royals goalkeeper saved all four. The lone goal for EMU came with minutes left in the third quarter.
The final goal of the game was scored two minutes into the quarter (47:14) by Alicia Reyes Romero with an assist from Madison Usher. This marked Reyes Romero first collegiate goal. Taff had her first save of the game at the 49:57 mark.
The Gophers outshot the Royal 22-5, with Madison Zubo leading the Gophers with 7 shots. Katie Bloom recorded the win, and added 30 minutes of play-time and one save. Taff added the final 30 with one save in net as well. Goucher earned eight penalty corners, compared to EMU's four.
