Gophers Fall in Close Game Against Lancaster Bible
LANCASTER, PA- The Goucher College Gopehrs (1-5 overall) fall to the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College (3-2 overall) in a close game on Tuesday night.
Goalkeeper, Katie Bloom set the tone early, with her first save of the game seven minutes in. Soon after, Madison Zubo got the Gophers going with their first shot of the game.
In the second quarter, Zubo kept the pressure with an early attempt, before K. Bloom was tested with back to back shots on goal. The Chargers were able to get the second shot past K. Bloom; taking the lead 1-0. Laureen Otieno saw her first action of the season with a shot coming in at the 22:11 mark. Just 20 seconds later, Ava Barnes and Madison Usher fired back to back shots at the Chargers defense. With five minutes left in the half, Lancaster Bible attempted two shots within 12 seconds of each other. The first half closed with Goucher holding a 7-5 edge in shots, while both goalies tallied three saves each.
Seven minutes into the third quarter the Chargers scored thier second goal of the game, but the Gophers fought back. Less than a minute later, Otieno found Zubo where she scored the first goal of the game for the Gophers. After several back-and-forth exchanges, the Chargers struck again with five minutes left in the quarter. Goucher responded once more as Zubo connected for her second goal, this time assisted by Angelena Holmes and Ateka Owino, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final frame.
To open the fourth quarter, Goucher took three shots against the Chargers. Mimi Taff checked in for the Gophers with ten minutes left on the clock. Less than a minute later, she recorder her first and only save of the game. To close out the last four minutes of the game, Goucher took three more shots.
The Gophers finished with an 18–12 advantage in shots and a 12–6 edge in penalty corners. Zubo led the attack with six shots and two goals, while Otieno added five attempts and Charlotte Bloom contributed four. In goal, K. Bloom played 50 minutes with five saves, while Taff closed the final 10 minutes with one save.
The Gophers are back in action at home on Friday, September 19th at 4pm, where they will celebrate their faculty/staff appreciation game.
