Gophers Strike Early Against Blazers to Come Out on Top
FREDERICK, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (3-4) defeated the Blazers of Hood College (3-5) on Wednesday night.
Hood saw the first action of the game by taking the first shot four minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Laureen Otieno took her first shot of the night and started the shooting streak for the Gophers. From that shot on, Goucher took control of the first quarter. The Gophers took two more shots in the next two minutes. At the 10:50 mark, Camden West found the back of the net to score the first goal of the game for the Gophers. The quarter was rounded out by both the Gophers and Blazers taking one shot a piece.
The Gophers stayed on the attack to begin the second quarter. First Years, Otieno and Madison Zubo teammed up to score Goucher's second goal of the game. Otieno found Zubo where she launched one past the goalie into the back of the net. After the Goucher goal, the Blazers went on the attack. Hood took three shots in under a minute. Katie Bloom got to work in goal by making her first save of the game. Hood completed the quarter by taking three more shots. Goucher took six shots in the first half compared to the Blazers eight. Both goalies made two saves each in the first half.
Goucher got their offense working quickly with Vivian Onunga taking a shot three minutes into the third quarter. Hood retaliated with two shots being just five seconds apart. Just over a minute later, the Blazers took back-to-back shots against the Gophers. K. Bloom did not let any of those shots get past her. Hood ended their strong offensive quarter with a shot just two minutes left.
K. Bloom tallied another save five minutes in the fourth quarter. The Blazers scored their lone goal of the game at the 49:47 mark. The Gophers came at the Blazers' defense with Ava Barnes and Zubo taking two shots six seconds apart. Goucher made their final offensive push with two shots coming in the last four minutes. Goucher took five shots versus the Blazers eight in the second half.
Zubo and Onunga led the way for the Gophers by taking three shots a piece. The Gophers ended the game with 11 shots in the game. K. Bloom recorded seven saves in this match up. Goucher ended the game with five penalty quarters.
The Goucher College Gophers are back in action on Saturday, September 27 at 1pm to take on conference opponent Drew University. The field hockey team will be highlighting Morgan's Message which is an organization that promotes student athlete's mental health.
