Despite Early Goal for Usher, Royals Offense Defeats Gophers
SCRANTON, PA- The Goucher College Gophers (4-6; 0-2 conference) faced the University of Scranton Royals (8-3; 2-0 conference) in a Landmark Conference match up on Saturday afternoon.
Scranton opened up the game with a strong offensive attack on the Gophers with three shots coming in the first three minutes. Goucher countered the attack by scoring their only goal of the game coming from Madison Usher with an assist by Angelena Holmes (5:36). In the next seven minutes, the Royals contained the offensive possessions and added two more shots. With under a minute left, Scranton scored their first goal of the game. Scranton followed this goal up with another goal one second before the end of the first quarter.
Scranton's offense did not slow down to begin the second quarter with a goal being scored five minutes in. Vivian Onunga got off her first shot in the game at the 23:55 mark. At the end of the first half, the Royals led the Gophers in shot attempts, 10-2. Katie Bloom had three saves in the first half compared to Scranton's zero.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Scranton took their first shot. Eight minutes into the half, K. Bloom recorded back-to-back saves for the Gophers.
Scranton and Goucher's Ateko Owino had shots early into the fourth quarter. K. Bloom added another save at the 53:37 mark. Two minutes later, Owino racked up another shot. Scranton capped off the game with their fourth goal coming in with less than three minutes left in the game. Madison Zubo ended the game for the Gophers with a shot with five seconds to spare on the clock. Scranton took nine shots in the second half compared to Goucher's three. K. Bloom had four saves versus Scranton's three.
Scranton outshot the Gophers 19-5. K. Bloom recorded 60 minutes in goal and tallied seven saves compared to three for Scranton. Scranton led the Gophers in penalty corners, 19-3. Usher scored the lone goal for the Gophers. Owino led the Gophers with two shots.
The Gophers are back in action at Beldon Field on Wednesday, October 8th where they square off against Catholic at 7pm.
