Two Goals from Zubo Propels Gophers to First Conference Win Against Cardinals
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (6-6; 1-2 conference) held The Catholic University of America Cardinals scoreless in their first conference win of the season on Wednesday night. This is the first time since 1995 Goucher field hockey has beaten Catholic.
First Year, Ateka Owino opened up the offense by taking the first shot of the game five minutes in. Goucher followed that shot up with two more coming in the next two minutes. With four minutes left in the first quarter, Catholic took their first shot of the game.
Goucher began the second quarter with two shots three minutes in. Catholic added another shot five minutes later. Junior, Angelena Holmes took her first shot of the game. Five seconds later, Alicia Reyes Romero added another shot for the Gophers. One second later, Madison Zubo scored the first goal for Goucher (24:52). Catholic ended the half with a shot on goal, saved by Katie Bloom. At the end of the first half, Goucher led in shot attempts, 8-3. K. Bloom recorded two saves compared to Catholic's three.
Goucher's offense went on the attack to start the second half with four shots coming in the first five minutes. Catholic halted the offensive push from the Gophers with a shot. The Gophers came back strong with another shot from Owino. Zubo racked up another goal for the Gophers at the 41:59 mark. K. Bloom had an excellent save against a penalty shot from the Cardinals.
Catholic's offense pushed towards the end of the second half with two shots less than a minute apart. Laureen Otieno closed out the game with the last shot coming at the 58:32 mark. To end the second half, Goucher led with seven shots to Catholic's four. K. Bloom added another save and Catholic added three saves.
The Gophers outshot the Cardinals, 15-7. K. Bloom recorded three saves and 60 minutes. Catholic led Goucher in penalty corners, 10-5.
The Gophers are on the road against Juniata on Saturday, October 11th.
